DPI is your image's pixels divided by the print size in inches, taking the smaller of the two dimensions. A 1920-pixel-wide photo printed 24 inches wide is 1920 / 24 = 80 DPI. This calculator finds that effective DPI, then judges it against a target set by viewing distance, so you know if a print will look sharp or pixelated before you send it.

How it's calculated

Three steps, no upload needed:

  • DPI = pixels / print inches, for width and height
  • Take the smaller of the two, since the weaker side sets the real quality
  • Quality = DPI / target DPI, where the target is 300 (handheld), 150 (wall), or 30 (billboard)

Why it matters

300 DPI is a myth. You don't need 300 DPI for a wall poster because you don't look at a wall poster from 10 inches away. This tool calculates the effective quality based on how far away the viewer is standing.

What DPI do I need to print a photo?

For anything held in your hands (a book, a flyer, a photo print) aim for 300 DPI. For a poster viewed from a few feet, 150 DPI is enough. For a billboard seen from across a street, 30 DPI still looks sharp. The right number drops as the viewer moves further away, so DPI alone never tells the whole story.

How do I convert pixels to DPI?

Divide the pixel dimension by the print size in inches. A 3600-pixel-wide image printed 12 inches wide is 3600 / 12 = 300 DPI. Do this for width and height, then take the smaller of the two, because the weaker dimension is what you actually see on the print.

Is 300 DPI always required for printing?

No. 300 DPI is the standard for close viewing, not a hard law. You do not need 300 DPI for a wall poster because you never stand 10 inches from a poster. Match the DPI to the viewing distance and you can print much larger than the 300 DPI rule suggests.
