Barcode Generator

A barcode you can download.

Pick a barcode type, type your value, and download it as a PNG or SVG. This tool draws Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 39 and ISBN barcodes right in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded and nothing is stored. Choose SVG for print so the bars stay crisp at any size, or PNG for screens and slides.

How it works

Each barcode type, or symbology, encodes a different kind of value and suits a different job. Pick the one that matches what you are labelling.

Type Best for
Code 128 Shipping labels, logistics, warehouse and internal asset tracking.
EAN-13 Retail products sold outside North America.
UPC-A Retail products sold in the US and Canada.
Code 39 Asset tags, ID badges, government and automotive inventory.
ISBN Books, on the back cover.

This draws the barcode graphic. A barcode that scans at a real retail checkout needs a product number assigned to you by GS1. Generating the image here does not register a number.

Questions people ask

What barcode type should I use?

For a retail product sold outside North America, use EAN-13; inside the US and Canada, use UPC-A. For a book, use ISBN (it is an EAN-13). For shipping labels, internal inventory or asset codes with letters and digits, use Code 128. Code 39 is the older choice for asset tags and ID badges.

Can I sell with a barcode I made here?

The image will scan, but a barcode that is valid at retail needs a product number assigned to you by GS1 (a company prefix). This tool draws the barcode graphic from whatever number you type; it does not register that number, so it is not the same as owning a real GS1 code.

Is my barcode uploaded?

No. The barcode is generated entirely in your browser with JavaScript. The value you type never leaves your device and nothing is sent to a server.
