This draws the barcode graphic. A barcode that scans at a real retail checkout needs a product number assigned to you by GS1. Generating the image here does not register a number.

Questions people ask

How is an ISBN barcode made?

The 13-digit ISBN (beginning 978 or 979) is encoded directly as an EAN-13 barcode. That is the barcode you see on the back of a book.

Where does the ISBN itself come from?

You get an ISBN from your national ISBN agency (for example Bowker in the US). This tool turns an ISBN you already have into a scannable barcode; it does not issue ISBNs.

Do I need the price add-on?

The main EAN-13 is enough to identify the book. The small 5-digit add-on encodes a suggested price and is optional; many self-published books skip it.
